Sandra Counts

SEATTLE – Sandra “Sandy” Jo Counts of Seattle died June 26, 2024, of a heart attack and Alzheimer’s disease. She was 82.

Born March 3, 1942, in Castroville, Texas, she attended the University of Texas and then medical school at Washington University in St. Louis, where she was one of only four women in her class. She earned her  medical degree and met her future husband, Richard Counts. They were married in San Antonio, Texas.

She worked as a physician, eventually practicing in the field of addiction medicine and chronic pain management, offering understanding and compassion to many in their darkest times.

A 55-year resident of Seattle, she was a member of St. Bridget Parish, where she belonged to the ACC guild. She is remembered for her kindness, generosity and warmth, as well as her keen interest in basket weaving and lifelong love of the opera.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard after 53 years of marriage.

She is survived by her son Matthew, daughters Sarah and Leah, and a brother.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. July 9 at St. Bridget Church in Seattle. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Seattle.
